KHIRUR - performance excerpt
Illuminating lace instrument, performed live with Sa’ar Rose.
Created as part of LABA: A Lab for Jewish Culture, performed at the 14st Y Theater in New York, NY
The instrument’s main body is made of optic fibers, intertwined through a bobbin lacemaking method. LDR (light) sensors are placed between the fibers, connecting to analog synthesizers that react to the light input. Different LED illuminators are used to “charge” the instrument with light. Using their hands and fingers to manually block and allow passage of light, Layla plays with varying exposure and rhythm. The light translates to sound, which Sa’ar transforms live by hooking up the synthesizers to effect pedals, which she adjusts as the performance progresses.
